Does Duolingo teach you to speak?
No. Duolingo is excellent at getting you to open an app and learn words. It is a weak way to learn how to hold a conversation. If you can tap the right tile and still freeze when a person looks at you, that is normal. The product never made speaking the main loop.
What Duolingo actually trains
Recognition. You see a prompt, you pick a match, you hear a clip. Over months you know a lot of vocabulary. Your streak looks serious. Friends think you speak the language.
Then you try to order food and the sentence will not come out. Retrieval under pressure is a different skill from recognizing a tile.
Some Duolingo lessons ask you to speak a line into the mic. That helps a little. It is still a prompt inside a game, not a conversation that keeps going when you stumble.
Why people think they "did" the language
The owl is good at completion. A finished tree feels like a certificate. Fluency is messier. You interrupt yourself. You guess. You sound worse than your quiz score.
I kept a long streak and still could not buy coffee. That gap is why we built Verbi, and it is why Reddit is full of the same complaint.
What to do instead
Talk. Every day if you can, even for a few minutes. A human tutor is best when you can book one. An AI tutor is what you open at 11pm.
Use Duolingo if the streak is the only habit that sticks. Add speaking on purpose. Do not wait until the tree is gold.
